Process Models

You have a process model with a subprocess that is called asynchronously (fire-and-forget) from a parent process. The subprocess writes to a database, and separately, a user is viewing a record-backed interface that reads from the same table. Under high concurrency, users occasionally report seeing stale data even after refreshing. Explain what's likely happening at the Appian engine level, and how you'd diagnose and fix it.

This points to a mismatch between Appian's process engine persistence timing and record type data source caching/consistency, rather than being a simple "refresh" issue. A few thin...

Data Type

Your organization is launching a new "Customer 360" initiative. They need to unify customer data that currently resides in two separate silos: a legacy on-premises SQL database and a third-party SaaS platform accessed via a REST API.The business requirements are:Unified View: Support agents must see a single, combined record for each customer.Performance: The application must handle high-volume traffic without lagging, even when fetching data from the external API.Business Intelligence: Management wants to use Process HQ to analyze this customer data and identify bottlenecks in the support lifecycle. As a senior developer, how would you architect this solution using Appian’s Data Fabric? In your response, please address the following:How would you use Record Types to bridge these disparate data sources? What Sync Options would you configure for these records to meet the performance and reporting requirements ?How does your architectural choice enable the data to be accessed and analyzed within Process HQ?

In the context of the senior developer scenario, you would use Record Types as the primary building blocks of the Data Fabric to unify the legacy SQL database and the REST API into...

Records

A developer configures a Record Type with Data Sync enabled and adds a record relationship to a secondary entity. After deploying, they notice that changes made directly in the database to the related entity are not reflected in the record list until several minutes later, and sometimes not at all after a manual refresh. What behavior explains this, and how should they handle near-real-time data requirements?

When Data Sync is enabled, Appian maintains its own internal cache of the record data. This cache is updated based on sync events, not on real-time database polling. Chan...

Query Expressions

Provide all of the steps you would take to analyze feedback from users of an existing application, plan design changes, and complete a refactor of the application. At your firm's financial services client, a senior transaction advisory group has complained about an existing application. The group handles hundreds of high-value, current financial transaction approvals, related to many thousands of previously approved clients. Because these transactions are time-sensitive, multiple executives often monitor the same queue simultaneously to complete reviews assigned to their group. Their primary issues are not knowing when tasks are completed by other group members, abandoned tasks that have an "in progress" status, delayed task completion time, lack of transparency into assigned tasks, and an inability to reassign tasks they've accepted. Additionally, the group complains about load times for the high volume of data they manage, and irrelevant transactions and tasks showing in their dashboard.

This question addresses delivery methodology and multiple technical design aspects (task locking, UI/UX, and query performance improvement).Delivery Methodology First, to address t...

Process Models

When working with a synced Record Type in Appian, I understand that data sync keeps the record data up to date in Appian's cache. However, two things are unclear to me:Which smart services automatically trigger a sync when data is written, and which ones require manual intervention? If a developer configures a scheduled sync (full or incremental) when setting up the Record Type, does that eliminate the need to worry about which smart services auto-sync or not?According to Appian's documentation, what is the correct understanding of how these sync mechanisms work together?

A scheduled sync doesn’t catch every data change. Record data stays current through three separate mechanisms, and each has its own limits.1. Smart services that sync automatically...

Process Models

When designing a Process Model that needs to iterate over a list of records and write updates back to the database, Appian offers several looping and execution patterns to accomplish this.According to Appian's official documentation, how do the following three performance dimensions differ across the available methods?Execution time — how quickly does the full update complete?Process instance memory usage — how much memory is consumed during execution?Process execution engine load balancing — how well is the workload distributed across Appian's execution engines? What is the correct ranking of available methods from best to worst, and what is the technical reason behind each ranking?

Ranked from best to worst on execution time, memory and engine load balancing:1. Script task with a!forEach()The whole update runs inside one expression evaluation. No process inst...
