What is Generative AI, and how is it integrated into Appian?

Generative AI is a type of AI whose models are trained on very large text, image and audio datasets so they can produce new content and answers from a prompt.

Appian builds generative AI into the platform itself: for building applications faster, for querying and summarising data, and for running multi-step work.

Where it shows up in Appian:

1. Appian Composer: turns natural-language prompts and existing documents (Word, text, PDF) into an application plan and design objects.
2. AI Copilot and Records Chat: assistants embedded in interfaces that let users query data, summarise a case, and chat with record data through drag-and-drop components.
3. Agent Studio: a guided way to build and govern AI agents that carry out multi-step tasks across workflows.
4. AI Skills: no-code data extraction, document classification, text generation and translation that sit inside a business process.
5. Private AI and guardrails: company data stays inside the compliance boundary, and environment-wide guardrails protect against prompt injection and data leaks by routing low-confidence actions to a human reviewer.

Example. A bank employee, Sarah, has to review a long loan application from a business client.

1. Instead of reading the 50-page document she asks the chat box in her Appian workspace: "Does this client meet our basic credit requirements?"
2. The generative AI reads the document and returns a short summary with the answer in seconds.
3. If it spots a problem, such as a missing financial statement, it drafts an email to the manager.
4. It then triggers an Appian workflow that pauses the application until the manager has checked it, so a person makes the final decision.
5. A manual job that took hours becomes a two-minute task.
