- HR Screening
- Technical Round
- Client Round
Questions Asked
Screening Round:
The screening round was straightforward. They mainly asked about my current project, responsibilities, and some basic Appian background. There was also a brief discussion about packages and general experience.
Technical Round (Virtusa – Tech Lead)
A Tech Lead from Virtusa conducted this round.
- Started with introductions.
- Asked follow-up questions based on my project explanation.
- Questions covered:
- Types of gates (XOR, Complex Gate)
- Removing null values from an array
- Other basic Appian fundamentals
Overall, this round was manageable.
Client Interview
Three people participated in this interview.
Person 1
- Asked for an introduction and details about my current project and responsibilities.
- Asked questions about Record Types and CDTs.
Person 2
- Asked about best practices followed in my project.
- I clarified whether they wanted best practices for interfaces, process models, or overall Appian.
- They said “anything,” so I explained:
- Interface best practices
- CDT best practices
- Process model best practices
- Record and Query rule best practices
Person 3
Focused mostly on expression rules.
Key questions:
- How to update a value inside a list/array
- How to remove nulls from an array
- Scenario where a query works inside an expression rule but fails on the Site with a general error — how to troubleshoot?
- (I explained checking logs, analyzing error details, etc.)
Back to Person 1
- Asked if we use Record Types in my project.
- I mentioned that in my current project we mainly focus on stored procedures and database views, so we work with CDTs more than Record Types.
- I noticed some disappointment since their project seems to rely heavily on Record Types.
- Additional questions:
- When to use a Decision Rule
- What is MNI and its limits
- How to handle errors when using MNI
- A scenario-based question asking how I would design a view.
Outcome
I answered most of the questions confidently and felt positive about the interview. However, I was unexpectedly rejected. The HR comment said, “The candidate doesn’t have any Appian knowledge,” which was very discouraging and didn’t reflect my actual performance.
I believe the mismatch was mainly because their project heavily depends on Record Types, whereas my current project relies more on stored procedures, views, and CDTs.
Preparation Tips
Just be confident. Sometimes, even if you answer all the questions correctly, the interviewers may be expecting something very specific that you might not have covered. It doesn’t mean you lack knowledge — it simply means their expectations and your project exposure didn’t align.
